The Empathy Deficit
How does a lack of empathy affect a relationship and why do some people lack empathy?
Empathy is nurtured from infanthood and it starts when infants try to connect with their parents or caregivers.
An infant will try to connect by holding up their hands, searching for faces and even crying.
If the infant is met with affectionate responses, this releases the feel good hormones in the brain.
If the baby’s attempts to connect are ignored, that caring part of the brain is stunted. This can be the beginning of raising a psychopath, Narcissist, and worse.
When a person lacks empathy, it allows them to dehumanise others. It stops a person from caring how their words and or behaviour affects others.
An empathy deficit contributes to domestic violence because the brain lacks the capacity to put the safety of another person before their own needs, demands and insecurities.
An empathy deficit is a contributing factor of Coercive abuse because this is about controlling another person with no concern for the partner’s psychological state and the needs and autonomy of the other person.
