Relationship Communication Styles
If you are struggling within your relationship, it maybe because you don’t understand your partner’s communication style and they don’t understand yours.
There are 4 styles of communication. These are assertive, passive, passive aggressive and aggressive.
Passive:
Someone with a passive communication style may avoid conflict by not expressing their true opinion on a subject and even agree with all their partner’s decisions. The problem with this is their partner actually wants to hear their partner’s opinion and not just agree with everything they say.
This type of person will have poor boundaries and be a people pleaser to their own detriment. They’ll say yes to people when they actually want to say no.
Another side of a passive communication style is they can push everything down until one day they explode.
Aggressive:
Someone with an aggressive communication style thinks they win an argument by speaking louder in conflict. They don’t listen to the other person’s perspective and will even talk over the other person. They will tend to deflect, blame and criticise their partner during conflict.
Passive-aggressive:
A passive-aggressive communication style will let their partner know their needs in a passive way. They will treat their partner with contempt, rolling their eyes when their partner expresses their needs because they are more concerned with their own needs.
In reality they feel powerless and resentful towards their partner.
Assertive:
An assertive communication style are able to express their needs in a healthy way without disrespecting their partner’s needs in the process.
They respect their partner’s needs and will listen without interruption or talking over them.
They have healthy boundaries and respect others for their boundaries.
