Love Languages

Meeting your partner’s love language is part of communication in a relationship.

When you give your partner what they need, (hitting the mark), your partner feels loved, valued and that they matter.

But “hitting the mark” isn’t always easy to do. We can think we are giving what our partner needs but still not hit the mark.

E.g. Mary not only loves receiving flowers, she specifically loves Sunflowers because her mother grew them when she was a child but her mother passed away when she was a child so Sunflowers reminds Mary of her life with her mother.

John, Mary’s partner knows Mary loves flowers but he didn’t really listen to Mary when she told John repeatedly she loves Sunflowers because they take her back to a happy time in her life.

So John consistently buys Mary flowers but in the back of Mary’s mind she wishes John would buy her Sunflowers, however she is reluctant to remind John because she doesn’t want to seem ungrateful and she had told John repeatedly about Sunflowers being her favourite flower but he is yet to give her what would really make her feel loved, valued and heard.

John thinks he is giving Mary what she needs to feel loved, however he still isn’t hitting the mark.

To meet your partner in their love language, conversations need to take place so each person can help their partner feel loved.

If you came from a family with no affection or healthy communication it may feel uncomfortable for you to show affection and have deep conversations with your partner.

This doesn’t mean you don’t need to be affectionate or have these conversations because your partner still needs this from you.
