How well do you understand your partner’s behaviour?
Behaviour can be a result of relationship distress when one or both people become emotionally disconnected.
When we don’t feel connected to our loved one, our behaviour can be predictable. We begin to pull away, become reactive or exhibit blame toward our partner.
Our primary emotion is to connect to our partner.
We express distress when we feel alone and can’t connect to the most important person in our life or feel inadequate and unimportant and don’t matter.
When we don’t feel comfortable in our relationship we begin to shut down.
Behaviours never come without emotions. When two people are hurting each other, the behaviour is driven by emotion and their love for one another which requires connection and it’s their feeling of disconnection which drives what appears to be bad behaviour.
It is easy to judge our partner based on behaviour rather than recognising emotional distress. All behaviour makes sense in context.
We try to make meaning of our partner’s behaviour while not seeing our partner’s emotional distress. One person will try to turn off the emotional heat by becoming silent and shutting down.
The partner exhibiting what looks like bad behaviour is not feeling heard or validated emotionally.
Both people in the relationship need to feel safe emotionally to open up communication around the relationship issues so they don’t remain unresolved.
