How well do you navigate through conflict?
Do you avoid conflict to keep the peace or do you engage in conflict but still remain friends and lovers?
During conflict do you become enraged, and hostile; stop listening and talk over each other?
Do you move into name-calling, blaming, defensiveness, deflection and criticism?
When conflict reaches this stage it is a good idea for both people to take a break from each other for 20 minutes and begin to self soothe such as deep breathing.
Don’t try and solve conflict when both of you are heightened. Both of your walls will be up and nothing will be resolved.
What is more important?
The relationship or being right?
When both of you have calmed down, you can consider each other’s perspective instead of talking over each other.
Remember, when you are both heightened emotionally, you lose your sense of humour and compromises can’t be made.
