Communication Styles in Relationships

How is your communication style?

During conflict do you both remain calm?

Whether you resolve conflict or storm off depends on the goal of the conversation.

Generally, a couple does not deliberately start an argument to hurt the other person.

Conflict is the evidence of needs not being met for each person.

Conflict that is never resolved is caused by reactivity, one or both people not feeling heard, talking over the other person to get the first word in, name-calling, yelling, criticism and even stonewalling.

The way to resolve conflict is to listen to each other to understand the other person’s perspective.

Conflict resolution takes trust and not assuming the other person has a hidden agenda.

Repeat back to the other person what it is you understand they’re saying.

If they’ve misunderstood you, understand how this could have happened without reacting.

Remember the end goal is to reach a resolution and to understand each other.
