Are you connecting in a way your partner needs?
When we enter a relationship we don’t think about connecting with our partner in a way the other person needs.
We connect with the other person in a way that we need leaving our partner not feeling validated, appreciated or affirmed.
Our family upbringing has a lot to do with how we communicate in our relationship. In every relationship, there will be two people who have different ways of communicating and connecting and subconsciously assume that our partner has the same needs as ourselves.
It is important to have a conversation with our partner about what it is they’re needing to feel valued, loved and appreciated.
Maybe one person needs quality time with their partner doing what they enjoy doing but also needs their partner to also to be spontaneous but their partner is waiting for them to initiate date nights or join them in their activities.
This needs to be a conversation around compromise and validating the other person’s needs.
Regarding offences, each person may have their own expectation of how the other person should apologise.
One person may need their partner to self-reflect and verbalise their part in the conflict while the other person is needing their partner’s behaviour to reflect their self-reflection.
Unless we have these conversations we are not connecting with our partners in the way that they need.
